The Stage Door | Hotel Teatro In Room Massage

Boris and Sofiya Mishurov are two of Hotel Teatro’s dearest assets and friends.  They bend over backwards to accommodate our guests and, once the guest has experienced massage from either one of them, they are requested again and again.

Boris began his journey as a massage therapist at the Belarus Massage School in 1980.  He went on to graduate from the Minsk Institute of Physical Therapy in 1982.  At the tender age of 20, Sofiya became certified at a massage therapist under Boris’ training and teaching.  While Sofiya found her niche in massage and physical therapy in a hospital, Boris was enlisted as the massage therapist for the Belarus Gymnastics Team. They have been licensed massage therapists in the United States for 19 years.

In 1992, they left Perestroika and moved to Denver. With currently 28 years of experience each, their two studios, one in Cherry Creek and one in Englewood,  are buzzing with activity.  Their knowledge of kinesiology and physical therapy have led to some surprising diagnoses and remedies for our guests who are suffering from injuries or less obvious pain.  Their client roster includes former President George Bush,  John Mellencamp, Charlie Watts and Charles Barkley.  More than anyone though, they take the most pride in restoring comfort and health to average individuals whose hard work and lifestyles bring on neck, leg and back pain.

Their specialties are wide ranging.  Boris and Sofiya each offer deep tissue, Swedish-Esalen and sports massage, energy balancing, reflexology , Rolfing and gentle relaxation massage.

Boris and Sofiya certainly do massage for individuals but are known at Hotel Teatro for their prowess at couples massage; allowing guests to feel comfortable and able to cater to individual massage needs at a moment’s notice.  This magical combo has been married for 39 years and are parents to two sons.  Both young men graduated from University of Colorado, the oldest residing in Denver and their youngest making New York City his home.

Massage at Hotel Teatro is $125 per hour.  The service may be billed to the room though we do suggest a cash gratuity if you feel their service is deserving and beyond expectation.  Boris and/or Sofiya will be our first contact for your massage needs.  Please contact the concierge at 303.228.1112 or concierge@hotelteatro.com to book a massage!

Visit Artwork Network during November for a display of landscapes from Tasmania, AU. Award-winning painter Stuart Clues has spent the last year preparing the “Somewhere Quiet” collection.  “We all have places we like to spend quiet time,” the artist says. “This was the essence of this collection of work. My island has a similar feel to parts of Colorado with large lakes, wild rivers and deep gorges. My work tries to capture the play of light on water and the serenity of these special places.”

Mr. Clues has been painting for over 15 years.  His intense blues have nearly shelved the typical green-grey landscapes which typified so much of Tasmanian art in years past.  He works primarily in oils and acrylics with pieces typically large; 3’ to 6’.  Stuart was born in 1968 and raised and educated in Tasmania.  He currently resides in West, Hobart.

The opening for this mesmerizing show is Friday night, November 4th from 5 pm—9 pm.  It is free to the public.  Artwork Network is located in the heart of the Santa Fe Art District at 878 Santa Fe Drive.

Tasmania’s pristine environment provides a unique clarity to the play of light on water and warm hues of sand and soil. – S. Clues

Belvedere Belgian Chocolates

Owners and operators of Belvedere Belgian Chocolate Shop, Johan and Han, moved from Belgium to the United States with their children in 1998.  By November of 1999, Castle Rock, Colorado was home to a brand new chocolatier which, instead of shipping the exquisite Belgium chocolates, designed and made them to order from their own kitchen.

Belvedere Belgian Chocolates are made with real Belgian chocolate which contains nothing but cocoa butter vs. other popular chocolate companies that have opted for the lesser, money-saving route of lowering the cocoa level by 5% (permitted by law) and substituting vegetable oil in the place of cocoa — yet still calling it chocolate.  Belvedere would call that a travesty and does not take that lower road to chocolate “manufacturing” but adheres strictly to the highest level of chocolate making standards, incorporating nothing but pure Belgian chocolate in their impressive array of delicious products.  The traditions learned by Han while attending chocolate school in Bruges, Belgium have gone unaltered in this family run operation.  The authenticity of Belvedere’s Belgian Chocolates has won them acclaim from national chocolate festivals to the many Colorado businesses that are loyal clients to this fabulous confectioner.

Belvedere Belgian Chocolates takes the trade a notch up, offering chocolates which DO NOT USE preservatives, colorings, artificial colors or trans fats (no hydrogenated oils!).  Their home factory is peanut free, an invaluable relief for anyone who has ever experienced a true allergic reaction to peanut products.  Their dark chocolate is lactose free and more than 10 praline and truffles assortments are completely vegan.  Fillings and centers are made from scratch with the freshest of dairy ingredients.  It is with pride that they explain, “All of our flavors are well balanced so that your pallet isn’t affected by an overwhelming aftertaste.  Like a delicious wine, it should fade away as you enjoy the flavors.”

Please contact the concierge at Hotel Teatro for any special chocolates you may care to have upon your arrival to Hotel Teatro or visit Belvedere Belgian Chocolates at www.belvederecholocates.com.

Cheeseman Park: Sanctuary….or not???

On a daily basis, the routine at Denver’s Cheesman Park at the intersection of 8th Street and Franklin remains the same.  With sunrise, runners and  walkers, many with dogs, begin pouring onto the  crushed granite path that circles this Denver oasis.  Soon sunbathers take to their favorite corners, picnickers unpack their baskets and cars begin lining the meandering road that leads counter-clockwise around the park.  On summer evenings, concert-goers throng to the eastern edge of the park, entering the Denver Botanic Gardens from the Gardens’ west gate for another night of award-winning music at their Summer Concert Series.  From the marble Greek Pavilion, visitors can see 150 miles up and down the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, a vista that is punctuated by Pike’s Peak to the south and Long’s Peak to the north.  This is a docile scene of people socializing, relaxing and enjoying another day in Denver’s exquisite outdoors. The picture wasn’t always so peaceful. Cheesman Park is situated atop a portion of Denver’s first city cemetery.

In 1858, General Larimer jumped a claim belonging to the Arapahoe Indians, claim jumping being a common practice at the time, especially when Native Americans were involved.  One morning in November, Larimer and his son staked out the area now taken by Cheesman Park,  the Denver Botanic Gardens and Congress Park.  The cemetery was originally home to paupers, criminals, and then eventually Jewish, Catholic, Protestant and Chinese settlers.

An Act of Congress in 1872 mandated the land as property of the United States Congress via an 1860 treaty with the Arapahoe nation.  Woefully mismanaged by undertakers, gamblers and lesser city fathers,  the cemetery was a shambles by 1890.  Consequently, the bodies were to be relocated and the area was designated a city park simply named Congress Park.  The Chinese were ceremoniously efficient and respectful to

their dead, sending remains home to China after a brief memorial.  The Jewish and Catholic communities were equally fervent in seeing to their dead.  But that left the remains of the homeless, crime victims, their perpetrators and, evidently, the Protestants, to be dismembered and boxed in smaller coffins by an undertaker named McGovern. He had been contracted to remove the remaining dead bodies at $1.90 per coffin.  McGovern became well paid, bored with the job, and proceeded to simply dump the leftover remains back into the ground, patting down the soil to an acceptable grade and going his merry way.

It is fairly well documented that disturbing the remains of the dead makes for some pretty put out poltergeists. Reports of being overtaken by waves of warm and cold are common among those venturing into the shadowy depths of the park after nightfall.  The Greek Parthenon, a memorial to Denver water baron Walter Scott Cheesman from his wife, is an ideal place to sit on a moonlit night and listen for the wailing of a particularly plaintive young woman.  There are no gruesome tales of supernatural antics in Cheesman Park but simply regular reminders that the acts of one or two men can keep a ghostly pot stirred decade after decade after decade.

The history of Cheesman Park is not for the faint of heart but in the daylight hours it is certainly one of the loveliest city parks in town.

Colorado’s A-Mazing Corn Mazes and Upcoming Events

October brings out home pressed apple cider, the ghosts and ghouls of Hallowe’en and, in Colorado, a terrific selection of that tricky agricultural phenomenon, the corn maze.  These two win the prize for neck-in-neck fun and challenge:

ANDERSON FARMS:

Boasting Colorado’s oldest and biggest corn maze, Anderson Farms is more than your garden-variety pumpkin patch. In fact, it’s like a small, animal-inhabited town. The massive, 30-acre corn maze works your feet while the new Sudoku maze challenges your brain. After panning for “gems” and saying hello to the baby goats, take a hayride out to the field and pick out the perfect potential jack-o’-lantern. Insider tip: Do not use GPS or mapping programs (such as Mapquest) to get to Anderson Farms. Go to www.andersonfarms.com for accurate driving directions.

MILLER FARMS & CORN MAZE:

The giant rooster in the parking lot is the first in a long line of oversized, antique and just generally weird attractions at this farm. The corn maze, pumpkin patch, petting zoo and hayrides have been luring visitors each  September for years as part of Miller Farms’ annual Fall Festival (ending Nov. 24). But October offers a reservation-only haunted hayride – a guided, leisurely roll to a haunted field promising plenty of screams and a cozy, hot-chocolate ending. Insider tip: The past few years, the farm has opened its fields to the public for a free-pick weekend in November. Last year they gave away an estimated 60,000 pounds of crops.  Visit www.millerfarms.net for details.

Jane Monheit at Newman Center – DU

The first time I saw Jane Monheit perform, she was opening for Roberta Flack at a benefit for Denver’ Historic Paramount Theatre in the late 90’s.  No one had heard her name much less her voice.  Meaning no disrespect to Ms. Flack,  Jane Monheit stole the show.  She was still a student at Manhattan School of Music at that time, graduating with honors a year later.  On Tuesday night, October 18,  Ms. Monheit returns after a few years’ absence, taking the stage at University of Denver’s Newman Center.

Jane Monheit grew up on Long Island  and began singing professionally while she was attending high school.  She studied under vocal master Peter Eldridge and, while at the Manhattan School of Music, garnered the William H. Borden Award for Outstanding Accomplishments in Jazz.  In 1998,  Ms. Monheit was named first runner up in the Thelonius Monk’s Jazz Institute’s vocal competition.  She had the jazz world buzzing.

Jane Monheit has gone on to perform in the world’s most famous concert venues.  She is a two time Grammy nominee and has collaborated with artists such as Michael Buble and Ivan Lins.  Her voice is clear and flawless with a soulfulness that belies her years. Ms Monheit owns her songs as she interprets the most beloved jazz standards, Brazilian classics and pop favorites on her own vocal terms.  She has recorded 7 albums and 2 DVD’s.  Her credits as a guest artist are too long to name.  A featured performer at the nationally televised Christmas at the White House, she has also appeared on Ramsey Lewis’ Legends of Jazz, Letterman, The View and The Today Show.

Jane Monheit spends most of the year touring with her band which includes Michael Kanan on piano, Neal Miner on bass and her husband, Rick Montalbano, on drums.  For details on this must see concert, please contact Hotel Teatro’s concierge at 303.228.1112 or visit the Newman Center at:
