What a wonderful time of the year to experience the excitement, the decorations, the lights, the events and everything else Downtown Denver has to offer!  The holiday season list of possibilities is endless and it’s hard to know where to begin!  The annual Parade of Lights through downtown on December 2 and 3 really helps get everyone in the spirit.  You might want to stop by the Denver Christkindl Market in Skyline Park, featuring European vendors, food and entertainment daily through December 23 – it’s an easy two block walk from Hotel Teatro on Arapahoe to the 16^th Street Mall.

     It is hard to imagine going through the holidays without taking in a performance of The Nutcracker!   The Colorado Ballet’s annual rendition of this classic is on stage now through December 24 at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, right next door in the Denver Center for Performing Arts.  Another perennial seasonal favorite is Dickens’ classic, “A Christmas Carol”, currently playing at The Stage Theatre, also in the Denver Center for Performing Arts.  If your tastes run a bit more towards the non-traditional, you may want to check out “Balls! A Holiday Spectacular”, billed as a “rollicking variety show with flashy guest stars, audience sock puppet sing-alongs, spontaneous Haikus and worthless prizes.”  Shows are on December 12 and 19 at Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret, also just a two block walk over to Arapahoe and 16^th, with proceeds benefitting Project Angel Heart.

On November 18, The Fillmore Theater presents the coolest new combination of funk and rock to take the stage in decades.  The Tedeschi Trucks Band features blues and soul songstress Susan Tedeschi and her husband, Derek Trucks, formerly of the Allman Brothers Band.  After taking a hiatus from their respective bands, it dawned on this dynamic duo that a collaboration of their music and the addition of their former band mates could result in something spectacular.  And it has!

Revelator, the debut record for this 11 member music machine is breaking down barriers all over the country as to what is rock, what is funk, what is soul and why do we care so long as it is mind-blowing?  On March 7 of this year, the band formally became the Tedeschi Trucks Band and began performing at such highly regarded festivals as Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival, The Savannah Music Festival and the Fuji Rock Festival.  Deferring to each others talents, The Tedeschi Trucks Band features songs by both and team song writing.  Revelator was rated 4 out of 5 stars by Rolling Stone Magazine, referring to it as a “masterpiece.”

Bartels One of Only 28 Individuals Recognized With This Designation, Across Multiple Categories, From More Than 170 Nominees

Denver, Colo.  (November 11, 2011) – Hotel Teatro is pleased to announce that Carolyn Bartels, concierge, was named “2011 Employee of the Year” in the Front of House category, by the Colorado Hotel & Lodging Association (CHLA) in its annual Stars of the Industry Employee Awards.

The Stars of the Industry Employee Awards Program recognizes outstanding accomplishments in the lodging industry each year, and honors lodging employees and properties that best symbolize quality service. The program is offered through the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) as well as through partner state associations, such as the CHLA, to honor the best and brightest stars both at the national and local level. State winners are announced each year at the CHLA fall annual conference; winners are then considered for further national recognition at the AHLA Summer Conference. There were 171 total nominations this year, and 28 winners throughout the CHLA’s various categories of recognition.

“We couldn’t be more proud of Carolyn,” said Jim Turner, general manager of Hotel Teatro. “She strives each day to make every Hotel Teatro guests’ stay memorable, and we can’t think of anyone more deserving of this award.”

Boris and Sofiya Mishurov are two of Hotel Teatro’s dearest assets and friends.  They bend over backwards to accommodate our guests and, once the guest has experienced massage from either one of them, they are requested again and again.        

Boris began his journey as a massage therapist at the Belarus Massage School in 1980.  He went on to graduate from the Minsk Institute of Physical Therapy in 1982.  At the tender age of 20, Sofiya became certified at a massage therapist under Boris’ training and teaching.  While Sofiya found her niche in massage and physical therapy in a hospital, Boris was enlisted as the massage therapist for the Belarus Gymnastics Team. They have been licensed massage therapists in the United States for 19 years.

In 1992, they left Perestroika and moved to Denver. With currently 28 years of experience each, their two studios, one in Cherry Creek and one in Englewood,  are buzzing with activity.  Their knowledge of kinesiology and physical therapy have led to some surprising diagnoses and remedies for our guests who are suffering from injuries or less obvious pain.  Their client roster includes former President George Bush,  John Mellencamp, Charlie Watts and Charles Barkley.  More than anyone though, they take the most pride in restoring comfort and health to average individuals whose hard work and lifestyles bring on neck, leg and back pain.

Their specialties are wide ranging.  Boris and Sofiya each offer deep tissue, Swedish-Esalen and sports massage, energy balancing, reflexology , Rolfing and gentle relaxation massage.

Boris and Sofiya certainly do massage for individuals but are known at Hotel Teatro for their prowess at couples massage; allowing guests to feel comfortable and able to cater to individual massage needs at a moment’s notice.  This magical combo has been married for 39 years and are parents to two sons.  Both young men graduated from University of Colorado, the oldest residing in Denver and their youngest making New York City his home.

This year’s Cassavetes Award winner is Judy Greer, a highly sought after actress, featured in supporting roles in many films including Love & Other Drugs.  She is perhaps best known as Kitty Chavez on Arrested Development.  Ms. Greer will now be taking the spotlight as Ashton Kutcher’s soon-to-be-ex on Two and A Half Men. An Evening with Judy Greer will take place at 8:30 pm on Friday night of the festival. A clips program will feature highlights of her career.

 - Alan Cumming

The Excellence in Acting Award goes to international film favorite, Alan Cumming.  From family films to cutting edge theater, Mr. Cumming’s credits and awards lists are miles long.  He is also a writer, director, producer  and activist for causes close to his heart.  A far cry from his riveting dramatic performances, there will be screenings of 2 of his family classics , celebrating their 10th anniversaries, on November 13 at 11:00 am and 11:30 am.

 - James Cromwell

The Mayor’s Career Achievement Award winner goes to chameleon-like actor, James Cromwell.  From the well liked owner of Babe, the beloved movie pig,  to evil incarnate in major feature films, this actor has entertained us for years.  His film, A Year in Mooring, will be screened at noon on Sunday, November 13.  A one-on-one conversation with Mr. Cromwell will follow.

WEDNESDAY, November 2nd at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House.  Stars light up the Red Carpet at 7:00 pm; Opening Night film, Like Crazy, at 8 pm. 

THURSDAY, November 3 marks the festival opening for the Denver FilmCenter/Colfax with the Red Carpet walk getting underway at 6:15 pm and Melancholia being screened at 7:00 pm. 

FRIDAY, November 4 is a Special Presentation of Wish Me Away at Highlands Church in historic Highlands Square, a few minutes from the heart of downtown at Lowell and 32nd Avenue. Red Carpet is at 6:45 pm with the film starting at 7:30 pm. 

SATURDAY, November 5 is the festival’s Big Night back at The Ellie Caulkins Opera House; Red Carpet at 7:00 pm with screening of The Descendants at 8:00 pm.

Visit Artwork Network during November for a display of landscapes from Tasmania, AU. Award-winning painter Stuart Clues has spent the last year preparing the “Somewhere Quiet” collection.  “We all have places we like to spend quiet time,” the artist says. “This was the essence of this collection of work. My island has a similar feel to parts of Colorado with large lakes, wild rivers and deep gorges. My work tries to capture the play of light on water and the serenity of these special places.” 

 Mr. Clues has been painting for over 15 years.  His intense blues have nearly shelved the typical green-grey landscapes which typified so much of Tasmanian art in years past.  He works primarily in oils and acrylics with pieces typically large; 3’ to 6’.  Stuart was born in 1968 and raised and educated in Tasmania.  He currently resides in West, Hobart.

The opening for this mesmerizing show is Friday night, November 4th from 5 pm—9 pm.  It is free to the public.  Artwork Network is located in the heart of the Santa Fe Art District at 878 Santa Fe Drive. 

Tasmania’s pristine environment provides a unique clarity to the play of light on water and warm hues of sand and soil. – S. Clues
